Chiller Plant, Building 11
Bethesda, Maryland

Acting as prime contractor we were responsible for expanding the chiller plant that provides chilled water to some of the world's highest technology laboratories. The project was an intensive effort in applying Kirlin's skills in shut-down planning and transitioning equipment into existing central plants.
After demolition and the required utility connections were made ready we installed two 5,000-ton chillers that required site erection were electric and steam turbine driven. Installing the chillers in an operating plant was successfully completed without unplanned down time. The plant configuration required three levels of demolition down to the sub-basement over 200 feet into the interior of the existing building.
The challenge of rigging included installing up to 36" diameter welded carbon steel piping and field assembled cooling towers. The installation of four new 7,500 gpm counter-flow cooling tower cells with associated structural steel was accomplished by our veteran staff of mechanics and millwright resources.
Our team had multiple trade responsibility for removal replacement of steel, concrete, drywall, masonry, painting and electrical. This miscellaneous trade coordination is a task we have proven capable of performing when major mechanical construction activities are required. The exacting standards for the distributed control system( DCS) with a new 4160 electrical service were also accomplished to support the expansion of this 24x7 operating chiller plant.
