HP Hood Dairy Plant
Winchester, Virginia

The 265,000 square-foot cGMP facility is one of the largest extended shelf-life dairy beverage production plants in North America. The plant supports both Hood brand business products produced for National brand products, such as Land O' Lakes, Nestle, Lactaid and Carnation.
The grass roots construction consisted of developing an 80-acre site with underground plumbing and process utilities. The overall building features truck unloading stations, laboratories, process blending and mixing rooms, blow-molding spaces as well as a casing/packing area. The plant has the capacity to process 45 million gallons of milk annually.
The plant utilizes ultra-high temperature (UHT) manufacturing and packaging technologies. The UHT system included a central boiler plant with four 250 boiler-horsepower steam boilers with a distribution system for clean and process steam. Clean in place (CIP) segregated storage silos, piping and equipment are washed down 24/7 to maintain sterile production conditions.
We were also responsible for a large high-pressure compressed air system serving various instrumentation and utility process requirements. The central compressed air system included two 500-psi and four 100-psi air compressors with all distribution piping. Compressed air services continuous filling of containers in a class 100 clean room as well as blowmolding a maximum daily capacity of 1,000,000 bottles.
