Allison Transmissions Manufacturing Plant
White Marsh, Maryland

This project was completed as one of the first major design-build manufacturing facilities for GM's Worldwide Facilities Group. Our participation in this project started with a rigorous prequalification process as well as a best value proposal competition. Included in this, GM evaluated our past performance in constructing mechanical systems for process and manufacturing plants.
Meeting the 13-month deadline on this 413,000 square foot facility required intensive jobsite quality management. Design and communications had to be managed carefully because we were building the mechanical systems before the manufacturing process was completely developed. With experience from other fast-track industrial projects, Kirlin dedicated significant resources to accomplish various critical path activities and modularizing the mechanical construction.
The mechanical contract included plumbing, HVAC, process piping, and wastewater treatment system. The plant required some 200,000 linear feet of pipe to service the manufacturing floor and the central plant. The process piping included process cooling, high-pressure air, ammonia, nitrogen, industrial waste, ATF fluid and condenser water. The central plant has 3,000-tons of chillers with 4,000-tons of cooling towers.
We are proud to have participated on a team that performed 414,000 craft labor hours with no lost time accidents.
