Hay Adams Hotel

Situated across from the White House in Lafayette Square and originally built in 1928, the Hay Adams Hotel recently underwent renovations to better accommodate business clientele and to improve its rooftop event space. Named after two historical figures - John Hay and Henry Adams – this famous landmark was President-elect Obama's temporary home prior to moving into the White House in 2009.
All 145 guest rooms and suites are now technologically equipped with HD televisions; Wi-Fi, high-speed internet and iPod connectivity; and safes to accommodate laptop computers. The Business Center and meeting spaces were also brought up to digital-age standards, and guests overall benefit from a new fitness center and new concierge desk.
The rooftop event space renovations project was drastic from a structural perspective. Within a short timeframe, the existing L-shaped banquet tent with clear plastic windows was disassembled and removed to make way for a new 40 percent larger, fully-enclosed glass structure known as "Top of the Hay."
Kirlin's scope of work included demolishing the old mechanical system and fabricating, installing, and starting up the new system infrastructure, which included a new condenser water system, three additional central station air handling units, one energy recovery unit and kitchen utilities. Kirlin also accomplished the mechanical work to enable the operation of a new lobby-to-rooftop express elevator.
The Hay Adams Hotel now affords its guests 21st century convenience preserved in an historical setting. The Top of the Hay offers the most coveted panoramic views of the city in a sky-garden setting.
