Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) and United States Customs House (USCH)

The ICC/USCH buildings from a significant part of a larger complex of buildings known as the Federal Triangle, an historical grouping of classical structures bordering the monumental mall area within the District of Columbia. The buildings house over 3,000 employees of the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
The Construction effort was accomplished in three phases and included a comprehensive modernization of the 1.2 million square feet of space. Kirlin was responsible for replacing the HVAC and plumbing systems with protective measures carefully coordinated to protect the historic features of the building.
The project included sensitive integration of modern mechanical systems into a building that was originally completed in 1934 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings. The new central heating and cooling plant was built for 24x7 duty servicing data centers and computer rooms. The plant and associated distribution systems were designed with many LEED's and sustainability credits. We also worked closely with the designers to adapt the design into the historic building fabric.
