Chiller Plant Modernization
Baltimore, Maryland

Kirlin was selected for this contract based on the scrutiny of the General Services Administration. The plant services some of the most important data storage and computer centers of the Social Security Administration. We served as Prime Contractor for the chiller plant upgrade project at the main headquarters of the Social Security Administration. The project increased the capacity of the plant and converted the distribution system to a primary / secondary variable flow pumping system for optimization of the plant. Work hours and outages needed to be closely coordinated with the facility personnel.
The project scope involved hot plant phased construction with one (1) new 4,400 kW (1,250-ton) YORK 134a centrifugal chiller, new cooling tower, VFD pumping system, new switchgear, pipe freezing, electrical, extensive condenser water and chilled water piping. Additionally, we completed re-piping and controls for (52) air handling units. The contract also included a new DDC plant control system and extensive commissioning program.
Other unique aspects of this project included pipe-freezing systems to make new piping connections. We also contracted for modernizing the electrical power systems and installed switchgear equipment with 16,000 kW of capacity. All this occurred without disruption to the occupants of the facility or any unplanned downtime.
