Sidwell Friends School
Location

Sidwell Friends School combined the renovation of an existing school with the new construction of an addition to the school totaling 75,000 square feet (36,000 square feet existing and 49,000 of new construction). This fast track project had to be opened in time for students to begin fall classes.
Sidwell Friends is the first school in the world to achieve LEED Platinum Certification. There were four aspects to putting the "green" to work: water management, energy efficiency, building materials and indoor air quality. The green roof vegetation holds and filters rainwater and provides a site to grow vegetables and herbs to be used in the school cafeteria. The energy efficient construction includes natural ventilation for most of its heating and cooling and odor free wetlands that treats sewage and recycle water to be used for toilets. Recycled, rapidly renewable and locally produced materials were used to furnish the building. Paints, carpets and adhesives were selected for low emissions of volatile organic compounds.
