Federal Correctional Institution
Cumberland, Maryland

One of the nation's largest correctional institutions, the project is a state-of-the-art prison facility. The prision encompasses 16 two-story buildings on a 100 acre site in Western Maryland.
Completed on a two-year construction schedule, the project incorporated administration buildings, detention facilities, and full support services, including cafeteria, medical/dental, recreation and laundry areas. The site's location and difficult conditions demanded thorough advance planning to overcome delivery, weather and accessiblity issues.
The hot and chilled water systems which service the facility were installed in an underground conduit system traveling over 25,000 feet to all 16 buildings on the site. All installed systems were completed according to exacting requirements for high quality, low maintenance, tamper-proof applications.
Extensive prefabrication applications were utilized to ensure the integrity and cost-effectiveness of the systems provided. The complex's 7,000-square-foot central utility plant was prefabricated, as was the cell chase piping for more than 700 prison cells. All prefabrication was completed in Kirlin's own shop.
