Butner Federal Correctional Institution III

Located North of Raleigh-Durham, NC, the Butner Federal Correctional Institution III Medium Security Facility consists of 16 buildings totaling 530,295 square feet. Each building within the facility is a single-story structure, with the exception of the three General Inmate Housing buildings that contain four levels each and the Special Housing unit containing two levels. Each General Housing building consists of 256 cells, while the Special Housing building consists of 96 cells. The campus style arrangement is fed with over 23,000 lineal feet of underground pre-insulated chilled & heating hot water piping from a new Central Utility Plant that abuts to the existing Central Utility Plant. The new plant houses two 650 Ton variable speed drive chillers and three 240 horsepower boilers.
When the need for a new federal correctional facility arose, the Federal Bureau of Prisons decided to focus on improving building performance and minimizing environmental impact. As a result, the Butner Federal Correctional Institution III became the first federal prison project to incorporate green building design principles sufficient to earn LEED certification. Each of the 16 separate buildings was designed to meet LEED standards.
This project received the 2007 Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Award from the Federal Bureau of Prisons. This award is presented to construction companies from across the country that best exemplify the spirit of partnering while working with project stakeholders. The winning companies displayed a superior partnering process that honored all stakeholders, resolved conflicts, improved communications, incorporated team building, and most importantly, resulted in a superior project.
