This facility has 1,100,000 square-feet with five levels of below grade parking and eleven stories above grade. The central plant is located in the top level of the parking garage, which houses 3,000 tons of refrigeration.
As headquarters for the largest multilateral source of loan and equity financing for private sector projects in developing countries, the building supports the administrative functions for 175 member countries that include specialized data centers and a trading floor.
The triangular site is bound by Pennsylvania Avenue, K Street, 21St Street and Washington Circle. Nearly 2000 staff occupy this building as a member of the World Bank Group. The importance of serving international commerce was integrated into the mechanical system. A separate zoned air handling distribution unit was installed. A perimeter system is provided utilizing 2-pipe fan coil units with electric heat. The interior air handling system is a variable air volume system utilizing variable speed drives on fan motors and energy efficient motors throughout. To obtain a maximum free cooling capability the combined use of an air economizer cycle and water economizer is provided.
Separate systems with 24/7 cooling were built to take advantage of both free cooling and the main refrigeration plant for continuous worldwide data operations.
