Union Station
Washington, DC

One of the most celebrated historic restorations in recent memory, the revitalization of Washington's Union Station has earned scores of awards and honors for excellence in construction.
The 1907 building had been allowed to fall into almost total disrepair, and required an extensive renovation and retrofit operation to modernize the building's system and renew its long-lost grandeur. Mechanical work on the project included removal of existing systems, installation of all new plumbing, HVAC, temperature control, building automation, security and fire protection systems, and tenant fit-out for the 1.3 millionsquare- foot train station.
The restoration was conducted while parts of the existing building remained open, servicing on-going railroad and subway operations. Significant upgrades of several services were required in order to ensure the uninterrupted continuation of these activities. All construction procedures were also subject to stringent restoration standards designed to protect the building's historic features.
