BWI Airport Terminal Curbside Expansion and Skywalks

The Terminal Curbside Expansion and Skywalks Project at BWI airport included demolition and new construction of additional lanes at Pier B to D arrival areas, along with the addition of vestibules and corridors in the parking garage. Two new skywalks were added going from the parking garage to the upper level vestibules at Pier B and D and renovations were made to the existing pedestrian tunnel which connects the 1st level of the parking garage to the terminal. The project was a wage scale project, requiring the participation from MBE and WBE while working with a phased schedule for completion and turn over of the multiple skywalks and vestibules.
The plumbing system consisted of renovations to existing restrooms and new drainage for the roadway canopy. The mechanical systems consisted of new air handling units to provide heating and conditioning to the skywalks by tying into the existing chilled and hot water system. The vestibule work included the installation of air curtains, while the mechanical rooms are conditioned by split systems. Two new louvered penthouses were places on the roof of the airport to house four roadway supply fans. The fans are ducted through a shaft and run underground to grilles, which are located throughout the arrival level of the airport. Working in conjunction with the supply fans are sixty exhaust fans to provide ventilation for the canopy covered roadway arrival level.
